The Market Hotel Grote Markt, Groningen, The Netherlands

The project refers to the expressive façade designs of the Amsterdam School of the early 20th century. The details, lintels, endings and base points of the pillars and slender pilasters are executed in dark grey Belgian granite from the region.

"The Market Hotel" on the Grote Markt in Groningen (NL) is the most recently built and final component of the square’s east side restoration. Our office produced the master plan for this urban restructuring, which envisaged the re-establishment of the original building lines, a connection between Grote Markt and Nieuwe Markt, and a development based on historical structures. The hotel’s design refers to the north European brick tradition that characterizes the cityscape of Groningen and connects historic stepped gables with modern architecture. The elegant hotel features a roof terrace, 123 rooms, conference and wellness areas, a restaurant and a bakery.
